2026年4月、ジョイセフの新しい取り組み「ガーナ若者未来プロジェクト Shine Youth Project ――からだと生き方を、自分で選ぶ力を」が本格的にスタートしました。貧困の中で、自分の生き方を自分で選ぶことさえ思い描けなかった若者たちが、知識や技術を身につけて自立し、地域づくりの担い手へ。そんな変化が、今まさに始まっています。
今回のレポートでは、プロジェクトの柱のひとつ——バイクタクシー運転手たちが地域のSRHRの伝え手「アンバサダー」になるための、オリエンテーションの様子をお伝えします。

In April 2026, JOICFP officially launched a new initiative: SHINE Youth Project (Sexual and reproductive health and rights, Hope, Income generation, and New opportunities for the Empowerment of youth).

The project supports young people who have grown up in poverty — young people who may never have imagined they could shape their own futures — to gain knowledge and skills, build independence, and become active contributors to their communities. That kind of change is happening right now.

In this report, we share a look at one of the project's core activities: an orientation session for motorcycle taxi drivers being trained as community ambassadors for SRHR.

知識も運ぶ「バイクタクシー」
Motorcycle Taxis That Carry More Than Passengers

ガーナの町中を走るバイクタクシー。「オカダ」と呼ばれ、人々の暮らしに欠かせない足となっています。日本の名前かと思いきや、以前アフリカにオカダという航空会社があったことから、「飛行機のように速い」イメージで呼ばれるようになったそう。
その運転手「オカダライダー」たちは、毎日たくさんの若者と顔を合わせるため、地域への大きな影響力を持っています。

そこで今回のプロジェクトでは、22名のバイクタクシー運転手（オカダライダー）を、SRHR（性と生殖に関する健康と権利）の正しい知識を広める「アンバサダー」として養成することになりました。彼らがライダー仲間や周囲の若者たちに情報を伝えることで、地域全体の意識や行動を変えていくことを目指しています。

オリエンテーションでは、スクリーンに映し出された絵を見ながら「何が描かれているか」をみんなで考えるところからスタート。「これは年上の男性が、お金の代わりに何かを求めているのでは？」といった鋭い声が上がり、会場は熱気に包まれました。

Motorcycle taxis are a familiar sight on the streets of Ghana. Known locally as okada, they are an indispensable part of daily life. The name might sound Japanese, but it actually comes from a former African airline called Okada Air — a word that stuck, evoking the image of something fast, like a plane.

The drivers — called okada riders — interact with large numbers of young people every day, giving them considerable influence in their communities.

In this project, 22 okada riders are being trained as ambassadors to share accurate information about SRHR (sexual and reproductive health and rights). By passing on what they learn to fellow riders and to the young people around them, the aim is to shift awareness and behavior across the community as a whole.

The orientation opened with a simple but powerful exercise: participants looked at images projected on a screen and discussed what they saw. "Could this be showing an older man offering money in exchange for something?" one participant observed — and the room came alive with discussion.

Hunger That Leads to Unintended Pregnancy

このプロジェクトが大切にしているのは、知識を伝えるだけでなく、「経済的な自立」をサポートすることです。

自宅でお昼ごはんを用意してもらえずお腹がすいている子どもに、年上の男性がお金を渡してだんだんと親しくなり、その見返りとして身体の関係を求め、意図しない妊娠につながってしまう——そんな現実が、いまも繰り返されています。


「自分の人生を自分で決める」ためには、経済的な自立が大切な柱のひとつです。そこで縫製・髪結い・金属溶接・電気工事・大工などの技術を、2年かけて身につけるトレーニングを行います。今年はまず、15人の若者が挑みます。

A core principle of this project is that sharing knowledge alone is not enough — economic independence matters just as much.

This is a reality that still plays out in many communities: a child comes home to find no lunch prepared, an older man offers her money and gradually earns her trust; over time, he expects something physical in return — leading to an unintended pregnancy. This cycle continues to repeat itself.

Being able to make choices about one's own life requires a foundation of economic independence. That is why the project includes two years of vocational training in skills such as sewing, hairdressing, metalwork, electrical work, and carpentry. This year, 15 young people are taking that first step.

もうひとつの特徴は、複数の企業・個人が力を合わせてひとつの活動を支えるということです。「大きな寄付は難しくても、この活動を応援したい」という気持ちが集まり、ガーナに届けられています。

Another defining feature of this project is that it is sustained by the combined support of companies and individuals alike. People who feel, "I may not be able to give a lot, but I want to support this work" — their contributions are reaching Ghana and making a real difference.
