WaterAid Japan is an official charity of the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2026 Charity. In this series, we are excited to introduce our Charity Runners taking part in the upcoming Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2026 Charity. This year, 38 runners will join Team WaterAid to help bring clean water to communities in need.

Kicking off our interview series is Professor Hiroaki Furumai, Chair of WaterAid Japan. This year, the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2026 Chairty will be his third time running with Team WaterAid.

1. Tell us about yourself
I am 69 years old and was born in the Year of the Monkey. I have conducted extensive research in water environmental technology with a particular focus on waste water treatment and water environment management. I was engaged in research and education at the University of Tokyo until retirement in March 2022. And now, I am currently a professor at the Research and Development Initiative of Chuo University, leading a co-creative research unit on urban water management. I have loved staying active since childhood, and I also serve as Chair of WaterAid Japan.

2. What made you start running in the first place? How many years?
I think I started running when I was 51. Back then, I wanted to lose weight, so I applied for the 10 km race at the Tokyo Marathon 2008. I was lucky enough to get a spot, and that’s what got me into running. Since 2010, I have been participating in an ekiden relay, which was organized to promote camaraderie and health among those working in local governments and organizations involved in sewerage. Until the event was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I took part in the race every year with university faculty members and graduate students, which is a really good memory.

3. What do you love about running or marathons?
Running is a great way to refresh my mind, and I really enjoy the feeling of sweating, which almost feels like a detox. It’s also a great way to stay healthy and manage my weight. What I especially love about the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon is the chance to run through the heart of Tokyo on the main roads, which makes it a unique and memorable experience.

4: What motivates you to run for WaterAid?
Hearing that WaterAid Japan has become as an official charity partner of the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon, I wanted to support their programs to achieve SDG6 through the charity run.

5: What are your goals for the upcoming race?
First and foremost, my goal is simply to finish the race. Last year, I wasn’t in good condition and couldn’t train enough in the lead-up, so I wasn’t able to run as well as I had hoped. This year, as I join the race at the age of 70, I won’t push myself too hard, but I am aiming for a pace of about 7 minutes per km.

6: If you have a message for WaterAid staff and local communities, your family, fellow runners, or even event organizers, please feel free to share it.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who are working toward achieving SDG 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation for all. I also hope to help share WaterAid’s incredible work with people around the world through the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2026 Charity.
