2026年3月1日(日)、東京マラソン2026が開催され、快晴のなか、約3万9,000人のランナーが東京の街を駆け抜けました。東京マラソン財団チャリティ RUN with HEART の寄付先団体として、ウォーターエイドが本大会に参加したのは今回が3回目となります。今年は、当団体を寄付先に選び、日本を含む世界各国から参加されたチャリティランナー109名がフルマラソンに挑みました。東京マラソン2026チャリティは、マラソンを通して、チャリティ活動の輪を広げる取り組みです。各寄付先団体が設けた金額以上を寄付し、大会への出走を希望した方は、チャリティ活動をアピールするチャリティランナーとして東京マラソン2026チャリティに参加することができます。

大会前の2月26日(木)～2月28日(土)には、東京ビッグサイトにて東京マラソンEXPO 2026が開催され、ウォーターエイドジャパンは他寄付先団体とともに、チャリティゾーンにブースを出展しました。初日から多くのチャリティランナーの方々にお立ち寄りいただき、世界の水問題解決に向けて出走するそれぞれの想いやレースへの意気込みをうかがったり、ご寄付への感謝やフルマラソンに向けた応援の言葉を伝えたりする貴重な機会となりました。ウォーターエイドのチャリティランナーとして2年あるいは3年連続して東京マラソンに出走されている方もブースにお越しくださり、チャリティランナーとスタッフが再会を喜ぶ機会にもなりました。

2月27日(金)には、東京都千代田区の皇居周辺にて、ウォーターエイドのチャリティランナーを対象とした交流会を開催しました。10名のチャリティランナーとご家族にご参加いただき、皇居の周り5kmを走った後、交流する時間を設けました。ウォーターエイドジャパンとしては初の試みとなる交流会でしたが、和気あいあいとした雰囲気でともに時間を過ごしたことで、参加者全員の仲が深まり、チーム・ウォーターエイドの絆が生まれたような時間でした。

3月1日(日)の大会当日には、スタッフやボランティアの皆さまが、チーム・ウォーターエイドの応援団としてコース沿道の複数のスポットでチャリティランナーに熱い声援を送りました。ウォーターエイドの青いTシャツを着てくださっている方や笑顔で声援に応えてくださる方など、懸命にフィニッシュを目指すチャリティランナーの皆さまに、応援している側が元気をもらえる機会にもなりました。

加えて、東京国際フォーラムでは、フィニッシュ後のチャリティランナーやそのご家族、ご友人にお越しいただけるチャリティラウンジにて、他寄付先団体とともにブースを設置しました。ブースでは、チャリティランナーの皆さまを拍手でお迎えし、レースの感想をうかがったり、完走タイムを表示させたパネルで写真撮影をしたりしたほか、多くのチャリティランナーの方々から、チーム・ウォーターエイドの一員として出走できたことについて温かい感謝の言葉をいただきました。「また会おうね」とスタッフと挨拶を交わしながらチャリティラウンジを後にされるチャリティランナーの方々の姿が印象的でした。

今回、東京マラソン2026チャリティを通して寄せられたご寄付は、総額27,255,998円となりました。ご寄付は主に、2025年5月からウォーターエイドがマダガスカルで実施している3年間の水・衛生プロジェクト（「Water for Life」）に使わせていただきます。このプロジェクトでは、学校やコミュニティにおける水・衛生改善を掲げ、2万5000人が清潔な水を使えるようになる予定です。また、1万人に正しい衛生習慣に関するメッセージを届けることも予定しています。今回、100名を超える多くの方に、ウォーターエイドの活動にご賛同いただき、ご寄付を通じて、またマラソンへの果敢な挑戦を通して、大きな勇気と感動をいただきました。チャリティランナーとしてご参加いただいた皆さま、そして本大会の運営に関わられたすべての方に御礼申し上げます。

On Sunday, March 1, 2026, the Tokyo Marathon 2026 was held under clear blue skies, with about 39,000 participants taking to the streets of Tokyo. This was the third time that WaterAid Japan participated as one of the recipient organizations for the Tokyo Marathon Foundation's charity RUN with HEART. This year, 109 Charity Runners from Japan and around the world chose WaterAid as their charity of support and took on the challenge of the full marathon.

The Tokyo Marathon 2026 Charity is an initiative that aims to expand the circle of charity through the marathon. Among those who donate an amount set by each charity or more, individuals who wish to participate as Charity Runners—helping to raise awareness for the cause—are eligible to join the Tokyo Marathon 2026 Charity as Charity Runners.

From Thursday, February 26 to Saturday, February 28, the Tokyo Marathon EXPO 2026 took place at Tokyo Big Sight, where WaterAid Japan, alongside other charities, hosted a booth in the Charity Area. Many Charity Runners visited from the very first day, giving us the opportunity to hear their motivations for running in support of solving the global water crisis, as well as their hopes and determination for race day. Several runners who have participated as WaterAid Charity Runners for two or even three consecutive years also stopped by, making it a joyful reunion for both Charity Runners and staff.

On Friday, February 27, we hosted a gathering for WaterAid Charity Runners around the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Ten Charity Runners and their family members joined us for a 5 km run around the palace, followed by time to socialize. As this was our first attempt at such an event, it became a warm and friendly occasion where participants got to know each other better through shared movement and food—strengthening the bonds of Team WaterAid.

On race day, Sunday, March 1, WaterAid staff and volunteers stood along several points of the course to cheer on the Charity Runners. Seeing runners wearing WaterAid’s blue T-shirts and hearing them respond with smiles to our cheers truly energized us.

In addition, at the Tokyo International Forum, we joined other charity organizations in hosting a booth inside the Charity Lounge, where Charity Runners and their families and friends could gather after the race. We welcomed runners with applause, listened to their race stories, and took photos with panels displaying their finishing times. Many expressed warm words of appreciation for being able to run as part of Team WaterAid. Watching Charity Runners say “See you again!” as they left the lounge left a lasting impression on us.

A total of 27,255,998yen was raised through the Tokyo Marathon 2026 Charity. The funds will mainly support our three-year water and sanitation project, “Water for Life,” launched in May 2025 in Madagascar. The project aims to improve water and sanitation conditions in schools and communities, providing access to clean water for 25,000 people and delivering hygiene messages to 10,000 people.

We are deeply grateful to the more than 100 individuals who chose to support WaterAid—through your donations and your incredible challenge of running a marathon, you have given us great courage and inspiration. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all Charity Runners and everyone involved in making this event possible.
