From April to September 2024, the construction of water supply systems, toilets and hygiene facilities was successfully completed. All official handover ceremonies to the local communities have been held, and now the focus is on consolidating and building on this fantastic progress. Through this journey, WaterAid has collaborated with local governments, businesses, and organizations to advance the initiative, leading to various positive changes in Cuamba District, as highlighted below.
1. Completion of Water and Sanitation Facilities at Five Healthcare Centers
At the five targeted healthcare facilities, the construction and repair of water supply systems, as well as the installation of toilets and handwashing facilities, were completed. As a result, over 11,000 healthcare workers and community members utilizing these facilities now have access to clean and safe sanitation services.
2. Enhancing the Sustainability and Operational Resilience of the Facilities
WaterAid has initiated efforts to distribute spare parts for the new water supply systems locally. A workshop was conducted to discuss the importance of local availability of tools and parts, with 43 participants, including local businesses. As a result, three local businesspeople have been identified to pilot this initiative. They received "starter kits" containing key parts to start selling, after which they can continue to order in parts from the nearby cities to sell locally.
3. Increasing Access to Water Supply for Households
As a result, 11,412 people now have access to clean water from public water points. Furthermore, 88 households expressed interest in installing private household connections, leading to the installation of dedicated taps, benefiting an additional 989 individuals.
4. Implementing Hygiene Behavior Improvement Initiatives
WaterAid trained 20 local "Hygiene Champions," including health technicians, civil society field officers, and community activists. These champions conducted hygiene training sessions at community gathering points such as clinics, schools, markets, and water collection sites. Despite challenges during the election period in September 2024, they successfully trained 1,479 community members, resulting in the construction of 135 latrines, 166 dish racks, and 30 handwashing stations by those individuals.
